# 1 - Summer computer trips

Vacation travelers should be vigilant when arriving home after long weekends like July 4, a popular time for the spread of computer viruses.

Most computer users tend to turn off their computers when they are traveling, which means that you are not receiving newly released antivirus patches or antispyware updates; the two most common areas that cause problems on computers. We recommend that you update your virus and spyware scans before opening email or connecting after a long absence.

We constantly see an increase in calls for virus related problems immediately after long weekends. Avoid problems entirely by updating your security software before using your computer. For a free list of viruses, threats, and spyware trends, visit: www.VisitingGeeks.com/downloads.htm

# 2 - Should You Leave Your Computer Running?

One question we frequently hear is, "Should I leave my desktop computer on or off?"

There are 2 schools of thought ...

Over time, this could cause a break in the circuits and lead to a system failure.

Leaving the computer on all the time causes excessive wear on mechanical components (the hard drive spindle motor and cooling fans).

Best compromise. The first morning user turns it on; last user turns it off.

We leave our desks on all the time to allow scheduled utility tasks to run during the evening hours. We also reboot systems (to flush RAM and reset OS) on a regular basis and routinely remove case covers to clean up any dust that may have accumulated, especially around fans and displays.

# 3 - Stop pop-ups!

Never click inside a popup window. Instead, close it by clicking the X in the upper right corner. Many people are tricked into installing spyware applications through pop-up windows that promise to clean up their system. If you get a message saying it can help, assume it is spyware and don't click!
