Advice on choosing a domain name
Before buying your domain name, think about the following: -
1) If possible, use your site name as the basis for your domain name, for example www.imsaifali.com for Discount Domains UK. This may sound like common sense, but not all sites follow the convention. If you use your name in your URL, it will be much easier for your customers to find you.
2) Generic names - If you can register a generic domain like toys.com, that's great, but most of these have already been removed. It is also likely to be more difficult to rank in search engines. Selecting a domain closest to your market segment will reduce competition. For example, www.imsaifali.com
3) Hyphenated Names - It's easy to forget the hyphen! What's the problem, especially if your customer remembers your name but not your URL. Although on a positive note, hyphenated names are less likely to be registered already.
4) If the .com or .co.uk extension is not available, consider the alternative TLD (top-level domain types) like .net or .biz. If your domain name has already been registered, approach the owner and ask if they will sell. They can accept £ 100. If you ask, they can just say no.
5) Plurals. Very often, a domain name will be free in the plural but not in the singular. It's a personal choice, but if the domain name you prefer isn't available, you might get stuck.
6) Short or long domains - A short domain name is more memorable, but less likely to be available. A longer domain is harder to remember, but it can contain more keywords, which is important since some of the search engines use keywords in a domain name as part of the search algorithm.
7) What kind of top-level domain: .com, .co.uk, .net, etc. This is a question that I am often asked. There is no evidence that search engines give preference to any type of domain name. However, some search engines, such as Google, have local searches, for example www.google.co.uk, which select local content. Customers often gain security by viewing a local TLD, as they know they are dealing with a local business, etc. Of course, you can register them all!
8) Variations: If your preferred domain name is not available, it is always worth trying a prefix, for example www.imsaifali.com or a suffix, for example Ali4U.com, etc.
